How to Trust God

When Life Feels Uncertain, God Remains Steady and Faithful

At Church of Grace, we believe trust isn’t just something you do when life is easy—it’s something you learn in the middle of the storm. Trusting God doesn’t mean ignoring your doubts, questions, or fears. It means choosing to anchor your heart in the unchanging character of a faithful Father, especially when everything else feels uncertain. He is the anchor of our soul.

Whether you’re navigating heartache, waiting for breakthrough, or wrestling with questions you don’t yet have answers for—God is trustworthy. And His Word gently and consistently invites us to rest in that truth. “Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday, today, and forever,” Hebrews 13:8.

What Does It Really Mean to Trust God?

To trust God is to believe that He is who He says He is—even when life doesn’t go as planned. It’s surrendering control and choosing to believe that God is good, that His timing is perfect, and that His promises still stand regardless of our present circumstances.

Trusting Who God Is

“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in You.”
 – Isaiah 26:3–4

God is loving, faithful, and completely sovereign. You can trust Him not because life is predictable, but because He is steady—even when you’re not. We are to keep our minds on Him, looking to Him, and peace will follow.

Trusting What God Has Promised

“God is not human, that He should lie... Does He promise and not fulfill?”
 – Numbers 23:19

Every word He has spoken is true. When you trust His promises, you’re not standing on shifting sand—you’re standing on rock-solid truth. When God says something, you can “take that to the bank,” as they say.

Trusting God’s Timing

“He has made everything beautiful in its time.”
 – Ecclesiastes 3:11

Sometimes God’s timeline doesn’t align with ours. But that doesn’t mean He’s late. It means He’s doing something deeper than we can see. Often we need to get into His Word so that we can develop His perspective about things. Though it may look like He is silent or not doing anything, we can be confident that He really is and He is most likely working on your character – what really matters to Him.

How Do You Trust God in Hard Times?

Let’s be honest—trusting God is easier to say than to live. But even in life’s hardest moments, God gives us practical steps to hold onto Him:

1. Remember His Faithfulness

“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed... great is Your faithfulness.”
 – Lamentations 3:22–23

Look back on moments when God carried you before. The same God who was faithful then will be faithful now. The Hebrew people celebrated many festivals throughout the year, they acted as memorials, testimonies that they would remember God’s faithfulness. Every time we partake of Holy Communion under the New Covenant, we are remembering the faithfulness of God.

2. Pray Honestly

“Present your requests to God... and the peace of God... will guard your hearts.”
 – Philippians 4:6–7

You don’t need fancy words. Just bring your heart. He listens—and He brings peace.

3. Meditate on His Word

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart... and He will make your paths straight.”
 – Proverbs 3:5–6

Let Scripture shape your thinking. Let it remind you of who God is when your emotions try to convince you otherwise. Meditation is huge in Scripture and it differs tremendously from Eastern meditation. We are not to “empty” ourselves, rather we are to fill ourselves with God’s Word.

4. Surrender Control

“My thoughts are not your thoughts... so are My ways higher than your ways.”
 – Isaiah 55:8–9

God’s plan may not look like yours—but it will always be better. Trust grows when you let go.

5. Embrace the Wait

“Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.”
 – Psalm 27:14

Delays are not denials. Waiting is where God often does His deepest work in us.

Bible Verses That Anchor Trust

Let these truths take root in your heart:

  • Psalm 56:3–4
“When I am afraid, I put my trust in You... In God I trust and am not afraid.”

  • Jeremiah 17:7–8
“Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord... they will be like a tree planted by the water.”

  • Romans 8:28
“In all things God works for the good of those who love Him...”

  • Psalm 37:5
“Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him and He will do this.”

  • Nahum 1:7
“The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in Him.”

Why Trusting God’s Timing Changes Everything

Let’s be real—we love control. We love quick fixes and instant answers. But God invites us to something better: to trust His timing.

God’s Timing Is Always Right

“Though it linger, wait for it... it will certainly come.”
 – Habakkuk 2:3

His delays are never wasted. They’re purposeful. He’s never late—He’s preparing you. I like to think of the old poloroid camera pictures. Once taken, they had to be developed in the dark room. If they were exposed to the light too soon, the picture would be ruined. God is developing you in the dark to exalt you for His glory in His timing.

Waiting Grows Our Faith

“Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete.”
 – James 1:2–4

Waiting stretches us. Shapes us. Makes us more like Jesus.

Trust Requires Stillness

“Be still and know that I am God.”
 – Psalm 46:10

Sometimes the loudest faith is found in the quietest surrender. This verse has had such an impact on my life. When I am still, I realize that He is God and I am not… This leads me to think of all the implications of that truth. I can humbly trust Him because He is the Almighty and He loves me.

Practical Steps to Build Your Trust in God

If you’re struggling, start with these small—but powerful—actions:

  • Start small
Trust God with one thing today. Just one. Let that faith grow day by day.

  • Keep a journal of answered prayers
Celebrate His faithfulness—even in the little things.

  • Stay in community
Surround yourself with people who remind you of God’s truth when your trust feels thin.

  • Choose trust daily
Trust isn’t a one-time decision—it’s a rhythm. Begin each day with, “God, I trust You today.”

Final Encouragement

If you’re waiting... hurting... doubting... know this:

God has not forgotten you. He is not distant. He is near. And He is trustworthy.

“Trust in Him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to Him, for God is our refuge.”
 – Psalm 62:8

At Church of Grace, we believe trusting God doesn’t mean having all the answers. Thankfully God asks for faith and not full comprehension of everything. It means resting in the hands of the One who does. So today, take one step closer. Pour out your heart. Let go of the outcome. And trust the God who has never failed.
